- CYBER SCULPT REVIEW
-
- The program Cyber Sculpt should more aptly be named "CYBER
- PUMMEL". This is the name that I refer to when I speak about the
- program because it seems that you can literally "pummel" shapes
- into whatever object you want. I know that the program has been
- out for quite a while, but I was weary of buying a new cyber-
- family software package until not too long ago. Since then, it
- seems to me that "Pummel" was well worth the money.
-
- Let's start with the program itself. CYBER SCULPT is what
- the CAD-3D object creator should of been! When I first looked at
- the program, I was not exactly sure if the program could be worth
- the $70 odd price that retailed for. After fooling around a bit
- with the program, I felt that this powerful 3D modeler would be a
- welcome addition to my cyber collection. Under the Files
- dropdown, you see the main feature which is saving and retrieving
- .3D2 files. Cyber Sculpt saves all objects in those formats.
- One interesting feature is that Cyber Sculpt gives you the option
- to use a digitizing tablet as an input device instead of a mouse.
- Under the Options dropdown there is the meat and potatoes of the
- whole program. Here, you can find the 3D editor, the Spin
- template, the extrude template, the sectional template,
- primitives menu, and the color palette menu. One thing about
- CYBER SCULPT is that it does not use color. Everything is done
- in B&W lines only. (an option for all lines showing or edges
- only is present) So if you want to color your objects, you would
- either have a good guessing ability to find proper shading, or
- you would have to import the saved .3D2 file to CAD 3D.
-
- The great thing about CYBER SCULPT is that you are able to
- create complex objects with ease. All the original CAD 3D
- selections are present in the program such as the H-skew/drag, V-
- skew/drag, rotate, scale, etc... However, unlike the CAD 3D
- environment, you have more options to be able to extrude
- irregular polygons. Some features in CAD 3D such as the spin and
- primitives features have been changed with the addition of
- several potent options. In the spin option, this includes
- partial spins of more than one turn, an x-amount of degrees, a
- capped start/end, and a spline path which the spinning object can
- follow. Some powerful features in the 3D editor portion of CYBER
- SCULPT enable you to rotate, stretch, scale, and delete not only
- the polygons set up in your template, but individual vertices
- within the polygon. The user also has the complete use of 3D
- mirroring, 2D/3D coordinate displays as well as scaling, face
- beveling, variable magnification, object distortion (skew, bend,
- twist) and a magnet feature which enables the user to pull and
- repel vertices based on how strong you set the magnet, and how
- close to the object the magnet is. Perhaps the most powerful
- features of CYBER SCULPT is the option to set a spline path while
- extruding, and the cross-sectional tool which enables you to set
- a topographical map of your object, and then let the user
- discriminate the high and low points of the object. (Such as the
- CYBER head on the front of the package.) The option to set a
- spline path when extruding is extremely helpful when a curve is
- wanted in an object or even a gradual change in shape is wanted
- in the object. It is possible in CYBER SCULPT to have a triangle
- shape at one end of the object, and have a pentagon shape at the
- other, even with the object being curved. This can be done with
- EASE! There is also an option to cap both ends of the object if
- need be, so you don't have to have a cylinder with both ends
- open.
-
- I would definitely recommend this program to anyone that is
- into CAD 3D or any type of 3D modeling. There are many more
- features in CYBER SCULPT that I am sure that I am leaving out,
- but due to time/space I can only include what I feel are the most
- important features. (Isn't it always that way?) One other thing
- about this program is its ease of learning. The manual is only
- about half the size of CAD 3D's, and just after working an hour
- with the program, I was feeling comfortable with it. Included on
- this disk is a .3D2 file of an A-10 Close-in military aircraft
- that I made. Although it is not the best looking object ever-
- created, I put it on the disk just to show how easy it is to
- create objects using CYBER SCULPT. The A-10 was created in only
- 1 1/2 hours after I brought home CYBER SCULPT for the first
- time. CYBER SCULPT is a program so chock-full of good features
- that it will be a welcome utility to aid the cyber-creator in all
- of his animation endeavors. -PL
